Subject: Urgent Release of All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for December 2024 – Unacceptable Delay Causing Anxiety Among Pensioners & Salaried Employees

Respected ,

On behalf of Bharat Pensioners Samaj (BPS), the largest federation representing pensioners across India, we write to you with deep concern and disappointment regarding the unexplained delay in the release of the All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) for December 2024, which was scheduled for publication on January 31, 2025 as per the official advance release calendar of the Labour Bureau.

As you are aware, the CPI-IW plays a critical role in determining Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief(DR) for millions of salaried employees and pensioners, many of whom are senior citizens relying solely on their fixed pension income for survival. The absence of this crucial index has created uncertainty, financial stress, and deep anxiety among pensioners and working-class families, who are already struggling with the rising cost of living.

The Impact of This Delay:

  • Pensioners and salaried employees depend on timely CPI-IW updates for DA/DR revision, which directly affects their monthly incomes.
  • Any delay in DA/DR adjustment translates into financial hardship, forcing many pensioners—particularly those from lower-income groups—to cut back on essential expenses like medicines, healthcare, and daily needs.
  • The credibility of the Labour Bureau and the Government’s commitment to transparency and efficiency is at stake when pre-scheduled releases are inexplicably delayed without official communication.

Sir, pensioners and salaried employees are not mere numbers on a government ledger; they are the backbone of this nation, having dedicated their lives to its service. A delay in the CPI-IW release is not just a procedural lapse—it is an avoidable act of negligence that leaves millions in distress. The government has always been sensitive to the needs of pensioners and working-class citizens. We urge you to intervene personally and direct the Labour Bureau to release the December 2024 CPI-IW index without any further delay.

Our Humble Requests:

  1. Immediately release the CPI-IW for December 2024 and ensure that such delays do not occur in the future.
  2. Issue an official statement explaining the reason for the delay and the steps being taken to prevent a recurrence.
  3. Ensure strict adherence to the Labour Bureau’s release calendar, as pensioners and employees depend on these timely updates for financial planning.

We believe in your leadership and commitment to the welfare of the nation’s retired and working communities. Please take urgent action to rectify this delay, as any further postponement will only deepen the financial stress and frustration of millions of pensioners and employees.

We sincerely hope and trust that this pressing issue will be resolved at the earliest.

With high expectations and warm regards,

Yours faithfully,

(S. C. Maheshwari)
